Construction Tour of the Park Plaza, Mount Vernon

Saturday, December 17th at 10:00am

Park Plaza Building
800 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201

Map and Directions

Join us for a in-depth look at the Park Plaza professional building in Mount Vernon. Burned in a five alarm fire last December, the former residence of Baltimore Sun founder, Arunah S. Abell has a rich architectural history. Originally constructed in 1842 and added on to many times, the building has served as residence, private club, disco, professional office and retail. You can read more on the building’s history via this article by Edward Gunts at the Baltimore Sun.

Post-fire, much of the original form has been revealed. We’ll take a look at the architectural evidence the fire revealed and get a sense of what it’s newest form will comprise. Paul Littman of Southway Builders and Tom Liebel, FAIA of Marks, Thomas Architects will lead us through the building and offer insight into the challenges of restoring this architecturally significant fire damaged building.

Dress for the elements, we are touring a construction phase project, closed toe shoes and comfortable dress suggested.

Please join us for a look at the newly restored Union Mill. You’ve been admiring it’s transformation every time you drive down the JFX, now come and get a close up look at it’s conversion from industrial to residential.

Erected in 1866, Union Mill was once the largest producer of cotton duck in the world, and represents a significant era in Baltimore’s industrial history. Transformed into elegant, affordable living and commercial space, this innovative project provides a vibrant, supportive environment where our educators and nonprofits can collaborate and thrive.

Hard Hat Tour of the Soon-to-Open Four Seasons Hotel

Thursday October 13th, 11:00am and 12:00pm, Cost $25 Members Only

Don your hard hat and join us as we get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Baltimore’s newest hotel, The Four Seasons.

Designed by the architecture team of BH&C (Beatty, Harvey & Coco) of New York and Baltimore and Hill Glazier Architects of Palo Alto, California, featuring floor to ceiling glass curtain walls that allow the harbor views to permeate the interior. The interior design by Brayton & Hughes Design Studio, San Francisco uses dark american walnut, marble, and glass throughout and is highlighted by purchased and commissioned pieces by Washington Color School and other contemporary artists.

In addition to getting a look at some of the luxuriously appointed suites and rooms, we’ll peek at the soon to open restaurants led by famed restaurateur Michael Mina and take in the exceptional views of our harbor. We’ll also visit the 10,000 square foot spa and the two pools including a year-round heated pool with an infinity edge that virtually spills into the harbor and a wide sunny terrace.

Due to the construction, this tour is limited to 5 people for each session.
Please RSVP to Tracey at baf@baltimorearchitecture.org and indicate which time you prefer: 11:00am or 12:00pm.

Hard hat will be provided. Parking is available in the garage under the Four Seasons.

Cost: $25 (Members Only)

Please join us on December 5th for a FREE tour led by The Honorable James F. Schneider, long time First and Franklin Street parishioner and Baltimore historian. We’ll take a look at the recently completed interior restoration, and tour the adjacent Rectory building.

Designed in the Gothic Revival style by Norris G. Starkweather, of Philadelphia, the cost of construction was $150,000 in 1859 with an additional $33,000 for the steeple in 1874.

First and Franklin Presbyterian Church is Baltimore’s oldest Presbyterian congregation, dating to 1761. First Presbyterian evolved from it first simple log building, to a magnificent neoclassical style church known as the “Two Steeple Church” at Fayette and Guilford, completed in 1795, to its current High Gothic style church in what was then the “center of fashion”, where many church members lived. Ground for the current building was broken 1854, and the church was dedicated in 1859.

This tour is FREE to members of The BAF.

BAF “Space Invaders” House Tour

Sunday, April 25th, 2010 @ 2:00 PM

The Grace Turnbull House
223 Chancery Rd
Baltimore, MD 21218
Map & Directions

Grace Turnbull, the renowned 20th century artist and Baltimore native commissioned her brother, Bayard Turnbull to design a house and studio for her in Baltimore’s Guilford neighborhood. The house, built in 1927, was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style and features an elegant studio where Turnbull created the sculptural work that she had turned to at that point in her career. At the time of its completion, the site was in rural Waverly, before the development of Guilford by the Roland Park Co. Turnbull adorned the property with her work, including four massive sculptures, hewn from tree trunks, that are located on the corners of the house.

Turnbull continued to sculpt well into her late 80s and finally put down the chisel at age 90. She created a number of works still on display to the public of Baltimore. She is the sculptor of Naiad, which is located in the fountain at the center of the East Park of Mt. Vernon Place. Turnbull also created the sculpture memorializing the Baltimore poet Lizette Woodward Reese, which is located on the grounds of the former Eastern High School at 33rd Street. To read more about Turnbull and her work, please read Maryland Art Source’s biographical profile. Tom Chalkley wrote another fun piece about Grace Turnbull and her work for the City Paper in 2000, which you can read here.

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation is pleased to announce that the current owners have graciously agreed to allow us to tour the house on Sunday, April 25th with a limited number of Foundation members. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a terrific work of architecture created by the brother and sister team of Bayard and Grace Turnbull.

Join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation as we tour the Morgan Park neighborhood with Prof. Dale Glenwood Green, Associate AIA, NTHP, LEED AP of Morgan State University School of Architecture and Planning.

Morgan Park is significant for its concentration of more than 145 historic detached residential dwellings, including the Morgan State University Presidents House, Dr. Carl J. Murphy residence which was frequented by Robert Kennedy, and the primary residence owned and occupied by Dr. W.E.B DuBois and his family; now a Baltimore City Landmark.

Developed in 1917, during the time of Jim Crow, Morgan Park provided housing for the faculty of then, Morgan College, now Morgan State University and other African-Americans who were legally barred by covenant from neighboring communities.

Today, it is a uniquely unknown neighborhood that warrants local, state and national recognition as it remains the only African-American neighborhood developed from the faculty of a historically black college or university (HBCU) that is still intact and thriving. Professor Green and his students have been researching and documenting the neighborhood’s history. Please join us for a brief presentation in the Student Center followed by 45 minute walking tour through Morgan Park.
