FREE Tour of St. Wenceslaus and St. Ann designed by E. Francis Baldwin

Saturday April 21st, 1:00 p.m., 2012

Please join us on April 21st as we take a closer look at two churches by Baltimore architect E. Francis Baldwin. Designed more than forty years apart and spanning two separate partnerships, the churches represent very different styles and periods. The first church, St. Ann’s was designed in 1872 while Baldwin was in partnership with Bruce Price. Then in 1914 while in partnership with Josias Pennington, Baldwin built St. Wenceslaus for a growing Bohemian congregation. Both churches feature exceptional examples of Mayer Studio stained glass. BAF Board Member and Historian Jim Wollon will join us to discuss the architectural histories of both churches. We will also be treated to a choral performance by the Baltimore Czech Choir.

Our first stop will be St. Wenceslaus in East Baltimore. Founded in 1872 in a neighborhood of East Baltimore then known as Little Bohemia. The parish was created primarily to serve the Bohemian (Czech) community in Baltimore. Church services were originally held in both the English and Czech languages. The present church was built in 1914 by E. Francis Baldwin, and at that time the church had 7,000 Bohemian Catholic members. By 1920 the church was the fourth largest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore. In recent years, the ethnic character of St. Wenceslaus parish has undergone a gradual change from a majority Czech parish to one that is multicultural and multiracial, first as many Poles and Lithuanians moved into the neighborhood, and then as the neighborhood shifted to having an African American majority.

Next we’ll head over to St. Ann’s on Greenmount Avenue. Built in1874, by Baldwin for Captain William Kennedy and his wife Mary Ann Jenkins. The Anchor out front is a reminder of Captain Kennedy’s vow to build the church after surviving a raging storm. Recent interior work, including new paint colors, were selected by the late Michael V. Murphy, FAIA.

Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church on Greenmount and 22nd Street was erected through the generosity of Captain William Kennedy, commander of one of the most famous Baltimore clipper ships, The Wanderer. Caught in a raging storm off the coast of Vera Cruz in 1833, Captain Kennedy vowed that if he and his crew returned safely to port, he would build a church as a testament of his gratitude to God. The anchor held. Upon returning to Baltimore, Captain Kennedy gave up his life at sea and gave up his brig. He did, however keep his anchor and chain. True to his promise in 1872, Captain Kennedy and his wife, Mary Ann Jenkins, secured property and funds for the church which was to be named for Saint Ann, the patron saint of sailors. The cornerstone was laid in 1873, the same year Captain Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy died. Although neither of them lived to see the church completed, they are both buried under the main aisle of Saint Ann Church.

The Church was completed in 1874 and was later expanded to increase the seating capacity. Later a school and convent were also added. In 1925 the original anchor was restored and placed in a stone cradle beside the cornerstone where it remains today. The historic, cultural and architectural significance of this church is well documented in the church archives, and the Church of Saint Ann continues to be a neighborhood landmark. (History taken from St. Ann’s website. More here.)

Special thanks to Father Peter Lyons of St. Ann and St. Wenceslaus for inviting us into these exceptional spaces.

Parking::
There is a large fenced in parking lot on the east side of the church. The parish will provide limited shuttle service over to St. Ann’s for the second part of our tour and will return tour goers to the parking lot at St. Wenceslaus afterwards.
Hard Hat Tour of the Center for Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies at Morgan State University designed by Hord Coplan Macht in association with The Freelon Group

Saturday March 24th 10:00 a.m., COST $15

Don your hard hat and join us as we get an exclusive behind-the-scenes preview of the Center for Built Environment and Infrastructure, which is anticpating a LEED Gold Certification from the USGBC. The tour will be led by Project Manager Julie Wilson, AIA and by the Dean of Architecture and Planning, Dr. Mary Anne Akers. Also attending and ready to answer all your technical questions will be Project Principal Tom Spies, AIA LEED AP and Project Manager Jeff Kreshtool, AIA of Hord Coplan Macht.

The Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies (CBEIS) will be a 126,000 GSF shared facility for academic engineering and design programs at Morgan State University. The Center will house research and instructional programs for Civil Engineering, Transportation, Architecture, and Planning in a highly collaborative environment within and among these disciplines.

CBEIS is being designed as a gateway building on the northern edge of the Morgan State campus. It will also create a strong link with and relate to the existing campus. The building will interact with two very different environments: the urban context along Perring Parkway and the natural landscape of the Herring Run Watershed. CBEIS will be the link between these two environments.

Along with the site and the program, Morgan State has mandated that the new facility be at the forefront of sustainable design practices, utilizing high performance materials and systems, serving both as a demonstration and an incubator of responsible planning, design, engineering and cutting-edge technology. The minimum requirement for the CBEIS building is to achieve LEED Silver certification, however, LEED Gold or Platinum certification is being targeted as not only possible, but strongly probable.

Some of the specific features of CBEIS include:

34 Classrooms/Studios/Computer Labs

100 Offices

10 Group Study Rooms, Conference Rooms, Jury Roos

4 Labs

Model Shop

Atrium spaces with skylights

Lounges

Green Roof

Loading/Service and 300 Parking spaces.

CBEIS was designed by Hord Coplan Macht in association with The Freelon Group, an architectural firm located in Durham, North Carolina which is currently designing the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The projected occupation date is Fall 2012. For more information please visit the Morgan CBEIS site here.

“Fortress of Finance: A History of the U.S. Treasury Building”

Lecture by Pamela Scott, Architectural Historian

Thursday, February 9, 2012
6:30 P.M. – light refreshments
7:00 P.M. – lecture

The National Trust for Historic Preservation
1785 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

T.U. Walter, Alteration of the Treasury Building’s East Facade, n.d.

The apparently “unified” exterior of the U.S. Treasury Building belies that it was created by five major Greek Revival architects and was built over four decades. Robert Mills won the 1836 competition and each of his successors-Thomas U. Walter, Ammi B. Young, Isaiah Rogers, and Alfred B. Mullett- changed the design of his predecessor. All of the architects faced similar problems to varying degrees: politically motivated congressional investigations; labor unrest; and timely delivery of materials. Each explored how emerging technologies could be applied to facilitate the rapid and orderly construction of the largest federal building of its time. At the same time, each architect expressed his individual interpretation of America’s foray into the revival of Greek architecture. Characteristic exterior and interior features associated with each of the architects and the draftsman J. Goldsborough Bruff will be clarified. Because the text of Fortress of Finance was cut by twenty percent, the lecture will also include a longer discussion of the construction of Mullett’s Cash Room than appears in the book.

Engraving after lost Robert Mills perspective of the Treasury Building

Pamela Scott is currently an independent scholar. Ms. Scott recently completed a major history of the U.S. Treasury Building, 1798-2005 titled Fortress of Finance, published in June 2010.

The lecture takes place at The National Trust for Historic Preservation, 1785 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.

Construction Tour of the Park Plaza, Mount Vernon

Saturday, December 17th at 10:00am

Park Plaza Building
800 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201

Map and Directions

Join us for a in-depth look at the Park Plaza professional building in Mount Vernon. Burned in a five alarm fire last December, the former residence of Baltimore Sun founder, Arunah S. Abell has a rich architectural history. Originally constructed in 1842 and added on to many times, the building has served as residence, private club, disco, professional office and retail. You can read more on the building’s history via this article by Edward Gunts at the Baltimore Sun.

Post-fire, much of the original form has been revealed. We’ll take a look at the architectural evidence the fire revealed and get a sense of what it’s newest form will comprise. Paul Littman of Southway Builders and Tom Liebel, FAIA of Marks, Thomas Architects will lead us through the building and offer insight into the challenges of restoring this architecturally significant fire damaged building.

Dress for the elements, we are touring a construction phase project, closed toe shoes and comfortable dress suggested.

Please join us for a look at the newly restored Union Mill. You’ve been admiring it’s transformation every time you drive down the JFX, now come and get a close up look at it’s conversion from industrial to residential.

Erected in 1866, Union Mill was once the largest producer of cotton duck in the world, and represents a significant era in Baltimore’s industrial history. After decades of reincarnations and neglect, the beautiful Italianate style building has been historically redeveloped under the latest green design and building methods. Transformed into elegant, affordable living and commercial space, this innovative project provides a vibrant, supportive environment where our educators and nonprofits can collaborate and thrive.

Evan Morville of Seawall Development will lead us on this tour of the newly opened residences and about-to-open 25,000 square feet of commercial spaces geared towards the non-profit community .

Park in the lot off of Union Avenue – follow the signs for the “Residence”.
