A treasure trove of information on the Roland Park Company, developers of Roland Park, Guilford, Homeland, and Northwood await our viewing. Every aspect of neighborhood development has been documented and saved within this collection – letters, plans, drawings (more than 2,000!), four volumes of photographs, marketing materials, plat and plot maps, and ledgers. So much information is included that it will take several semesters before the entire collection is even cataloged. Currently, it is being accessioned and housed at the Libraries Service Center on the JHU Applied Physics Lab campus in Laurel.

This is a unique opportunity to see an important piece of Baltimore history before it is fully available for researchers. Spaces are limited.

The School of Architecture at Penn State is working on a project to design buildings for several sites in Greenmount West and to improve the design of public spaces. They are now ready to present their work to the community, hear what the community has to say, and work with the community to come up with other ideas.

Please come to the Montessori School this Sunday afternoon, at the corner of Guilford Avenue and Lanvale Street.

Penn State students will present and take questions from 1:00 PM to 3.00 PM.

The community will then work with the Penn State students in a charrette from 3:00 to 5:00. This is a chance for the community to test its own ideas.

This is a fascinating chance to get some completely new ideas about the future of Greenmount West. Good ideas? Bad ideas? You’d better come and find out!

LOCATION

The Maryland Club
1 East Eager Street
Baltimore, MD 21202

INFO

Please join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation for our annual Groundhog Day Fundraiser. After roughing it for a few years in some of Baltimore’s best industrial spaces we’ll be partying in style this year at The Maryland Club. The fireplaces will be roaring, the food plentiful, the bathrooms heated, the parking on-site and the music happening with The Swingin’ Swamis.

The Club was designed by the prominent Baltimore firm of Baldwin and Pennington in the Romanesque Revival style in 1891. The Maryland Club features Beaver Dam marble on the exterior while the interiors are a rich interplay of oak, marble, ornate plaster, and faux finishes characteristic of high Victorian tastes of the time. The building today, after it’s 1995 fire, has been restored to its original grandeur and is an architectural time capsule of 19th century Baltimore.

Join us for Baltimore’s best Groundhog Day Party.

Tickets may be purchased at the door on the evening of the Party or via Paypal.

Mechanic to Millionaire: The Peter Cooper Story, a film produced by The Gardner Documentary Group, will cover the life and times of this 19th century pioneering inventor and philanthropist who still speaks to us. Peter Cooper built The Canton Iron Works in Baltimore and cobbled together the first American steam locomotive, the Tom Thumb. From railroad rails he developed the wrought iron I-beam for multi-storied construction, which allowed cities to grow vertically. He was instrumental in financing and laying the first transatlantic cable with Cyrus Field.

With less than a year of formal schooling, he founded The Cooper Union for The Advancement of Science and Art in 1859, realizing his dream of free education for thousands of Americans. The Great Hall, a public auditorium on the lower level, continues to provide a platform for major social movements and politicians advocating reform. It was here that Abraham Lincoln made his celebrated “Right Makes Might” speech that arguably won him his party’s nomination for president.
Before being nominated by his party for President, Barack Obama also spoke eloquently about our troubled economy, and later won the top place on the Democratic ticket.

Through his life of invention and philanthropy, we learn about Baltimore’s role in the industrial revolution and Cooper’s vision of social justice. During this recession, his warnings and business advice resonate and bring him back in a fresh and startling way.

James Dilts, historian and noted author of The Great Road: The Building of The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad will join producer/director Janet Gardner for the Q&A discussion following the screening.
