To commemorate the role Baltimore’s Inner Harbor area and Harborplace played in shaping the history of modern-day Baltimore, Urban Planner and Journalist, Martin Millspaugh, along with the Baltimore Architecture Foundation will offer a free, narrated presentation relating to the documentary, Global Harbors: A Waterfront Renaissance. Mr. Millspaugh’s presentation will be introduced by author and authority on Baltimore architecture and development, Charles B. Duff. A free, guided walking tour of the harbor area, hosted by Mr. Duff, will follow the presentation. The walking tour will showcase the history and future of this outstanding example of urban renewal.

Mr. Duff, author of the Midtown Community Plan has been central in facilitating the revival of Baltimore’s four central neighborhoods.

Mr. Millspaugh was a member of the City’s original Inner Harbor planning committee responsible, along with Developer James Rouse, for bringing the concept of Harborplace to fruition.

Since opening in July 1980, Harborplace has played a major role in the renaissance of Baltimore City. Thirty years later, Harborplace is still a vibrant and vital part of the downtown business and tourist district.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010 :: 6:30 PM

6225 Smith Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21209

At the Baltimore Architecture Foundation’s Annual Meeting, the organization’s annual awards for achievement in the field of architecture will be presented. The Golden Griffin Award, honoring the achievement of an organization, will be presented to Gutierrez Studios. The Roger D. Redden Award, for individual achievement, will be presented to James T. Wollon, Jr.

Although renowned Baltimore metalwork artisan John Gutierrez died in April 2010, he left behind a legacy of magnificently designed and meticulously crafted metal sculptures and accoutrements, as well his business, Gutierrez Studios, at 2010 Clipper Park Road. The Baltimore Architecture Foundation honors his memory by presenting the Golden Griffin Award, an award recognizing a company’s contribution to the architecture of Baltimore, to the Gutierrez Studios. Gutierrez’s work is found in Baltimore at the Pope John Paul II Prayer Garden, Sinai Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, throughout Clipper Mill, and at Woodberry Kitchen. In Washington, DC his work may be seen at the Holly Hunt Showroom, Museum of the American Indian, Jefferson Memorial, and the Freer Gallery.. The award will be accepted on behalf of Gutierrez Studios by Roya Golpira. Gutierrez, a Baltimore Architecture Foundation Board member, was a vital presence in the Baltimore arts community. His metalworking studio at Clipper Mill was a magnet for other artists; his hospitality was as legendary as his artistry.

Architectural Historian James T. Wollon, Jr. A.I.A., who has worked in the field of historic preservation since opening his own office in 1972, and is an avid chronicler of the history of architecture of the Baltimore region, will be awarded the Roger D. Redden Award for individual achievement in promoting architecture. Although he retired from active practice in 2008 Wollon continues to research the provenance of buildings across the region from his farm in Harford County, where he is the fifth generation of his family to own the land. Wollon founded the Baltimore Architecture Foundation’s “Dead Architects Society,” a reference collection (both print and on-line) of the work of Maryland’s 19th Century architects. Wollon has contributed countless hours to building these archives and generously helping scores of amateur architectural historians unearth information about a building’s history.

The event will take place in DLA Piper’s office on the Mount Washington campus, a magnificent space designed by noted Baltimore modernist architect Charles Brickbauer. Baltimore Architecture Foundation members, friends and family of both honorees are invited to attend.

The Thomas Viaduct was designed by the young Benjamin Henry Latrobe II, son of America’s first architect. Named for the B&O’s president Philip Thomas, the 704-foot stone arched bridge still carries CSX train traffic between Washington and Baltimore. It crosses the Patapsco River at Relay.

Antero Pietila, retired Baltimore Sun editorial writer, discusses what he learned from his long career writing for the Baltimore Sun and how he saw a need to address and create rhetoric focusing on this historically problematic American city. Not in My Neighborhood explains why Baltimore is still suffering the aftereffects of long-term racial segregation and bigotry on both a city and federal level. Mr. Pietila’s book surveys major players in the complex mix of local housing and public policy setting and offers new insights concerning personal relationships of these key actors.

BAF “Space Invaders” House Tour

Sunday, April 25th, 2010 @ 2:00 PM

The Grace Turnbull House
223 Chancery Rd
Baltimore, MD 21218
Map & Directions

Grace Turnbull, the renowned 20th century artist and Baltimore native commissioned her brother, Bayard Turnbull to design a house and studio for her in Baltimore’s Guilford neighborhood. The house, built in 1927, was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style and features an elegant studio where Turnbull created the sculptural work that she had turned to at that point in her career. At the time of its completion, the site was in rural Waverly, before the development of Guilford by the Roland Park Co. Turnbull adorned the property with her work, including four massive sculptures, hewn from tree trunks, that are located on the corners of the house.

Turnbull continued to sculpt well into her late 80s and finally put down the chisel at age 90. She created a number of works still on display to the public of Baltimore. She is the sculptor of Naiad, which is located in the fountain at the center of the East Park of Mt. Vernon Place. Turnbull also created the sculpture memorializing the Baltimore poet Lizette Woodward Reese, which is located on the grounds of the former Eastern High School at 33rd Street. To read more about Turnbull and her work, please read Maryland Art Source’s biographical profile. Tom Chalkley wrote another fun piece about Grace Turnbull and her work for the City Paper in 2000, which you can read here.

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation is pleased to announce that the current owners have graciously agreed to allow us to tour the house on Sunday, April 25th with a limited number of Foundation members. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a terrific work of architecture created by the brother and sister team of Bayard and Grace Turnbull.
